FUE hair transplant (Follicular Unit Extraction)
Good bye to Baldness with FUE
FUE or follicular unit extraction is a wonderful technique that gives magical results to its patients so they can kiss their early onset of baldness a lasting goodbye. Hairs are a defining feature to an individual’s overall personality; the hair color, texture, style, length etc. all adds up to the overall perception of theirs in the society up to a great extent. They act not just as an element of beauty to you but are also an indicator of your health (smooth well kept hair gives out a perception of health and hygiene). Just as our facial features and maintained physique adds onto our beauty, so do our hair. An additional feature being the fact that hair protect our head from heat & sun’s harmful radiation as it falls on to our hair instead of reaching our scalp. At old age it’s natural to lose hair but, losing your hair cover at young age can be devastating and may be an indicator of under lying physiological weakness or some other invasive condition. In the late 90’s a technique was developed to re-grow hair and increase hair count using the patient’s own follicular unit. This technique was known as follicular unit extraction (FUE) or follicular transfer (FT).
How this works
In this technique, the patient’s hair bearing regions are treated as resistant donor areas and the follicular units are extracted from this area one at a time. These extracted follicular unit grafts (hair groupings of 1, 2, 3 or 4 hairs as they occur naturally in the scalp) are harvested one by one using a small punch usually ranging from 0.7 to 1 millimeter in size. Usually before starting the follicular unit extraction from the donor area, the hairs are trimmed off so that the physician is able to see the patients scalp while operating.
Since the direction and the angle at which the follicular unit is present beneath the skin cannot be easily deciphered and may often differ from the direction in which the hair grows on the surface, a sharp but small incision is made just below the surface of the skin that might transect or sever the underlying follicular unit making it easier to extract the follicle of interest. However, the dull punch tends to envelope the follicular unit, while separating it from the surrounding soft tissues.
This process is typically referred to as blunt dissection. Once the follicular unit is separated from its surrounding tissues it can be then extracted using the forceps by gripping the hair from above the surface. The mild depression that is left behind in the donor region after the extraction of the follicular unit heals on its own over a span of a 2-3 days. Each follicle unit that is being extracted is examined extensively using a stereoscopic microscope and the non-hair bearing skin attached to the follicle may then be trimmed off, if not required. The extracted follicular unit may be transferred to the recipient site as soon as it is extracted, or grafted one by one or may be kept in a holding solution that contains growth factors and regeneration factors that help in keeping the extracted follicle units viable for a considerable amount of time.
This procedure does not require any deep incisions anywhere on the scalp saving the patient from any kind of undesirable scars that used to be inevitable in the conventional hair treatments. This technique is associated with a smaller recovery time and it’s less invasive nature makes it one of the most popular hair treatments at present. The long lasting result of a follicular extraction has sparked a new ray of hope in patients battling everyday humiliation due to bald patches.
